"A simple top-down sock with an optional Tubular Cast On and Garter Stitch Short-row heel," says Neatby. We confess that this sock (from Neatby's seminal book Cool Socks Warm Feet) changed our knitting lives. Now we understand the virtues of the garter stitch heel and we make all our sock heels with not 50% of the original stitches, but the percentage she recommends, and are much the better for it. There are basic sock patterns by the bucketload. This one, with 10 (ten!) given sizes for a 7.5" ankle on up, and lots of drawings and detailed Neatby refinements-- read the data pages-- is uniquely valuable.
