1010 Girl's Victorian Coat (Top Down, 18 months - age 10)

"A fancy little coat with a gathered skirt and a shawl collar," observes Soucy. "Looks great with dresses! Knitted from the top down in a light worsted or DK weight yarn at a gauge of 20 sts to 4 inches. Sizes 18 months to girls 10. Yarn shown is Lorna's Laces new yarn Honor, a blend of baby alpaca and silk." Sheer luxury, then, in a flowy silhouette that's hard to pin down in time (and impossible for boys to wear). Front bands are garter stitch; collar is picked up last and worked in garter as well. Just a wonderful piece.

(If you're looking for a more celebratory look than usual for boys, this Henley Top has just the right feeling, is knit top-down and has a comparable sizing to the girl's Victorian Coat--ed.)

The row gauge is 26 sts to 4 inches. Please note that the exact row gauge is not important, but exact stitch gauge is very important.

Can any one help me with this? The gauge is given as 20st = 4" stockinette stitch on larger needles. Can anyone say how many rows there should be? I never quite get the size right on garments if I don't do a gauge test.

Bernie1-- you use both a US 6 and 5 knitting the body of the garment.

Just like to check that the needle size in pattern is US 6 or 5? Many thanks

No error, the fronts even out when you divide for the sleeves.

Is there an error in the pattern? On the cast on row (first row), the pattern calls for casting on two stitches for one front section and one stitch for the other front section. I have made lots of these Diane Soucy top-down patterns so I thought it was an error and cast on an equal amount for both fronts. I checked the pattern errata online on the Knitting Pure and Simple website and there is no mention of an error. Other than that, very easy to knit and am enjoying knitting the coat.
