Elizabeth Smith

Common Ground

I needed a versatile long-sleeved cardigan for my fall/winter wardrobe. Something that wasn’t too heavy, definitely not too light (since I’m always cold!), not too plain but also not too complicated, and something that would work with all of my other clothes, whether they be casual or more dressed up. And I wanted it to be an easy, seamless knit but that wasn’t a boring project either. Out of all these demands came “Common Ground.”

It’s an open cardigan sized from XS-4X that is knit seamlessly from the top-down. It is meant to be worn open, so it does not completely cover the chest. The yoke part is knit in garter stitch to give it some texture. Then the body incorporates a simple diamond eyelet stitch pattern that gives it that extra something special. I included a hood to really give it that autumnal feel, but since the hood is created by picking up stitches you could always forego adding it if you prefer. It’s knit up using bulky-weight yarn so it’s a pretty fast project--I used Cascade Ecological Wool which, at over 470 yards a skein, you’ll only need 2-4 skeins of (depending on your size)!

Common Ground can be that great layering piece that you enjoy knitting and works great with your entire wardrobe.

Just finished this everyday sweater and simply love it. The pattern is very well written and very easy step-by-step instructions. The sweater worked up quickly with the bulky yarn. I chose Cascade Eco+ yarn in red. The pattern was simple to adjust, I lengthened the body and shortened the sleeves a bit with no problem. Next time I'm going to leave off the hood and do a sailor type collar. Elizabeth Smith gets an A+ for this one.

I like this sweater! It was a quick knit and I wear it almost everyday especially at work. On the next one I will make it so it closes and I will use a different yarn that doesn't pill(hopefully doesn't pill) and I will make it a bit longer.I also Love that there is no sewing involved. All in All nice pattern.
