Distant Hills Felted Bag
"Even if you don't live near a mountain range, you can evoke the mood of the landscape with this felted tote bag," says Leja. "Worked in the round from the base up, its features include an inside pocket and long, doubled handles that form part of the bag's hilly motif. The stranded sections tend to tighten the fabric of the bag, resulting in the unusual, vessel-like shape." Even when Leja goes simple, as here, she is still elegant; her motif suggests native art, and her execution is traditional fair isle (with woven-in floats). As usual, her instructions are as comprehensive and wide-ranging as you could possibly wish-- for example, the charted colourwork is written out completely. Gauge is given before felting. The only sewing is attaching the handles.
