AC6e Felt Beret

A universally popular style for men or women, this definitively French beret is a great place for beginners to start their knitting careers, too. Gauge isn't a huge concern, and any unevennesses can be taken care of by the felting process. As you become more confident, you can venture beyond the felted brim and try the rolled band. Opportunities for embellishment abound. You can experiment with needle felting or embroidery, or be very sophisticated and "bind the edge of the plain band with ultrasuede," as Galeskas suggests (shown on the purple beret). She recommends Naturally yarns for felting.
