Complementary-warp Pick-up for Experienced Band Weavers
The complementary-warp pick-up technique produces beautiful double-faced bands.
One face of the band shows a light motif on a dark background while the other shows the reverse. It is one of the most common patterning techniques used by weavers in the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands.
This complementary-warp structure can be woven on any set-up that enables the weaver to produce warp-faced bands. The warp threads are divided into two basic sheds from which they are selected to form patterns. The patterns are most often woven using two contrasting colors - generally one light and one dark. One shed on the loom holds all the dark threads, while the other holds all the light threads.
Inkle loom weavers, for example, need to set up their looms so that all the threads of one color are heddled and all the threads of the other color are in the open position. Weavers who like to use a rigid heddle for weaving warp-faced bands need to thread all the ends of one color through the holes and the other color through the slots.
Backstrap weavers who use continuous string heddles, will enclose all the threads of one color in the heddles and the threads of the other color in a shed loop.
Step-by-step instructions, accompanied by clear and detailed photos, take you through the weaving process. They include lots of tips and handy hints that Laverne shares from her more than twenty years of experience practicing, as well as teaching, this technique.
The forty-two pattern charts, which are accompanied by pictures of the woven bands, range in size from four to twenty threads. The smaller motifs on their own make delightful bands that can be used as lanyards, shoelaces and straps for bags. They can also be used as border designs alongside the larger patterns in the book. The patterns include traditional motifs found on textiles in the highlands of South America as well as adapted and original designs.
