UKHKA 153 Baby Shoes, Egg Cosy, Wrist Warmers, and Bag
The UKHKA has recently issued a good number of beginner garter stitch patterns, but this one impresses us particularly. (UKHKA 154 as well, for the same reason.) We think it would be an ideal pattern to interest younger beginner knitters, because the items are so small, and younger attention spans are not typically lengthy. A very young girl could knit the wrist warmers for her adult mom, and then be encouraged to work out the size for her own pair based on her gauge and what would cover her own hand... there are lots of possibilities here that could teach the young how to customize their own pieces.
From the publisher: "The main aim of the UK Hand Knitting Association (UKHKA) is to raise the profile of hand knitting. It does this through 'Learn to Knit' classes held throughout the UK, 'Relax and Knit' stands at all the principal UK Knitting and Sewing shows, and by the introduction of National Competitions showcased at the Knitting and Sewing shows." To this end, no specific yarn is recommended-- just choose the appropriate weight of something you like and make sure you meet the gauge requirements.
