UKHKA 159 Blanket and Cushion in Aran
Here we are just a hair's breadth away from absolute beginnerdom, and yet these pieces look fresh and sassy. You can, of course, buy yarn especially for them, but they are just perfect for using up coordinating scraps (we love the word 'oddment'-- that's what you need here, lots of oddments). The garter squares in the blanket are all worked individually and then sewn together, so that's great travel knitting; in the cushion, you run the colours not in use up the side, so there aren't a lot of ends to sew in afterwards. Fun, easy, and thrifty design.
From the publisher: "The main aim of the UK Hand Knitting Association (UKHKA) is to raise the profile of hand knitting. It does this through 'Learn to Knit' classes held throughout the UK, 'Relax and Knit' stands at all the principal UK Knitting and Sewing shows, and by the introduction of National Competitions showcased at the Knitting and Sewing shows." To this end, no specific yarn is recommended-- just choose the appropriate weight of something you like and make sure you meet the gauge requirements.
