UKHKA 96 Cardigans and Hat (2 preemie - age 1)
A lot of simple patterns exist that make lovely, if light, DK garments for kids. This one, though, boasts both tenderness and heft. Using a half-brioche (or half-fisherman's rib) stitch, where one row is knit and another is worked in a 1 x 1 rib with the knit stitches worked as K1B (Knit 1 Below), you get a thick, cushy, deep fabric that envelops the child in softness and warmth. Collar is worked all in one go; the shawl collar is shaped with wrapped short rows. Looks fantastic in any style of yarn whatsoever.
From the publisher: "The main aim of the UK Hand Knitting Association (UKHKA) is to raise the profile of hand knitting. It does this through 'Learn to Knit' classes held throughout the UK, 'Relax and Knit' stands at all the principal UK Knitting and Sewing shows, and by the introduction of National Competitions showcased at the Knitting and Sewing shows." To this end, no specific yarn is recommended-- just choose the appropriate weight of something you like and make sure you meet the gauge requirements.
