UKHKA 95 Waistcoats and Slipovers (preemie - age 2)
This is a wonderful pattern for many reasons, not least of which is its seasonless versatility-- every baby needs a vest of some kind all year 'round. But there's a level of detail here that's unusual. First, the C5 cable instructions are a little different (see the data page), but that's easily managed. The detail that strikes us is that every other set of cable centres is filled with seed (UK: moss) stitch. It's not noticeable at first, but only becomes apparent slowly-- subtle, thoughtful. The different neck treatments are just perfect, and the design works ideally well for boys or girls. Just don't pick a really busy yarn-- you'll lose the detail.
From the publisher: "The main aim of the UK Hand Knitting Association (UKHKA) is to raise the profile of hand knitting. It does this through 'Learn to Knit' classes held throughout the UK, 'Relax and Knit' stands at all the principal UK Knitting and Sewing shows, and by the introduction of National Competitions showcased at the Knitting and Sewing shows." To this end, no specific yarn is recommended-- just choose the appropriate weight of something you like and make sure you meet the gauge requirements.
