Kim Hargreaves

This cardi embodies every Hargreaves virtue: it is quiet and understated and noble. It is also surprisingly simple to make. The body fabric is all st st. The contrast colour (grey in the photo) fabric is worked in an easy herringbone stitch. As done here, it is a 4 row repeat with every other row purled; the active RS rows are simply K2togs, knit stitches, and a simple increase. The front bands are worked of a piece with the fronts, so you will be working with two colours at once, but that's not hard. The bands are faced and closed with press studs. The body widens slightly as you work up from the waist; sleeves are beautifully set in. When you want to look utterly in command of a situation, wear this. From the book A Season's Tale.
