Rushmore Hat & Cowl Set

Rushmore Hat & Cowl are knit in the round in one piece. The unique texture is created by staggered pleating of horizontal purl stitch bands which makes for a warm and cozy fabric that looks much more intricate than it really is. The Rushmore Cowl (available as a separate pattern for $6 here) can be knit in one color or two, and requires the ability to knit and purl in the round. The Rushmore Hat (available as a separate pattern for $6 here) is a slightly slouched hat that lends itself to being worn in a variety of ways. Knitting begins at the rolled brim and ends at the crown. You can personalize the hat with a pompom, tassel, or other embellishment, or complete it as pictured. Directions are for a solid color hat.

The technique for pleating is fully explained with a photo tutorial.

(Buying the set is a splendid deal over buying the patterns separately. And this set gives great mileage, because it can look so wonderful in so many different yarns that you could experiment with it forever. Make sure you have a look at the cowl done in the two colours. Great for men or women, too-- Ed.)
