3851 Shawls
WEB EXCLUSIVE

These heirloom-quality pieces are equally impressive either as shawls for a discerning woman, or as christening or baptismal wraps for babies. Despite appearances, neither is particularly hard to knit. The circular shawl is worked in three flat pieces-- first the main outer circumference, all garter stitch; then the border, separate; then the smaller inner piece, also in garter. You then assemble and seam all the flat pieces into the whole. The square piece is worked in st st as a giant square; then the border is worked separately and sewn on; then you make the (27) leaves, and appliqué them on as shown or to taste. Both have an unearthly delicacy. Gauge given over garter stitch for the circular shawl, and st st for the square one, in both cases using 4mm needles.
