His and Hers Whistler Hat

Is there a gentler way to be inducted into fair isle work? First one's confidence is built up by working in one colour, then a second and third, all in little stripes. Then you are nudged into every fifth stitch, every fifth row; then a little more and a little more, and before you know it, you're quite adept and wondering how it happened (though CC2 is really better done as duplicate stitch). And then the crown and the hat is over, pretty much, and next thing you know you're wondering if you should pony up the big bucks and buy old Alice Starmore books on eBay since fair isle is not the bear you feared.
