Little Bear

"Several years ago my younger daughter requested a toy bear, but 'not a teddy bear, like a real bear'. She had seen real black bears in cottage country. The first versions of this pattern were done in browns and blacks, but simply changing the yarn colour to natural white gave a nice little polar bear instead. You can use any feltable wool (or mohair) and appropriate needles and end up with a bear, sometimes larger, sometimes smaller. If you can find a nice fingering or thinner weight yarn, you can produce a tiny bear, which makes a nice ornament. No gauge is given-- it really doesn't matter for this pattern! The pattern is suitable for a confident beginner."

This guy is seriously cute, for a knitted "real bear." As seen in the illustration, you should prepare yourself for the polar bear not felting too well. Not many white color yarns felt. The stitches will still be quite visible--but I think it's sweet that way.

. . . .

I very much enjoyed knitting this guy. I did my first one using Lamb's Pride Bulky and size 13 needles. The second one is just some off-white worsted weight wool that's been in stash forever. I'm knitting the big guy a cub, using size tens.

Designer replies:

Thank you again and I'm glad you enjoyed making the pattern.
