5408 Easy Knit Sweater

At first glance I thought that this might be a bit much for a beginner-- having to switch back and forth between garter and st st, and being able to tell reverse st st from garter. But that's not how it's made! The double-garter-ridge effect is created by switching needle sizes every two rows. Genius! It's really garter stitch after all, and you just have to remember to switch needles every time you start one side of the garment-- not so bad. The ribbing (welt) has a slipped stitch every other row to keep things interesting. It's a handsome, rustic, easy piece for girls OR guys.
