Elizabeth Green Musselman
for Dark Matter Knits 2012
Inspired by the Italian provenance of the Volute yarn used for the design sample, this men’s zippered cardigan has a European flair. The asymmetrical fronts, long cuffs, and oversized cowl collar derive straight from men’s runway fashion, while the fitted shoulders, hip shaping, and roomy body flatter the masculine silhouette.
Volute is a cotton/acrylic blend that has a soft, velour-like hand that makes it a pleasure to work with and wear. (Rowan Calmer would be a good substitute.)
The garment also has a nearly seamless construction for an easy finish.
(Worked in one piece from the hem up to the armholes, which are shaped for set-in sleeves; shoulders are sloped with wrapped short rows, and cast off together. Sleeves are picked up and knit down to the cuff in the round with with a short-rowed cap-- no wraps here. "Velluto" means velvet in Italian. Enjoy that for yourself-- you may not want to tell him until after you've cuddled him in this for a while-- Ed.)
