744 Basque

Penny Straker: “This is my mother’s rendering of the ancient traditional pullover worn by the sailors of the Basque region in Spain. Mom’s original was knit in navy blue and white mercerized sport weight cotton. The well-tailored boat neck, always comfortable, has a Stockinette Stitch facing which is hemmed down, and nicely finishes and holds the shape.

“Basque can be knit in an array of fibers from alpaca, to wool and cotton blends, to some of the interesting bamboo and linen blends. It’s important to use a smooth, worsted spun yarn to keep the stripes clean and crisp!”
