SSSP111211 Skein Snake - Sewing Pattern for making tool to restrain skein for washing
SEWING PATTERN FOR MAKING SKEIN SNAKE - a tool for anyone who works with skeins of yarn.
Sewing your own Skein Snake is simple and you can make as many as you need!
Skein Snake works like this:
No need to pin a skein into a pillowcase, just zip around and wash by method appropriate for the yarn. Machine washing and drying (when appropriate) is easier because the skein is held tightly, preventing tangling. Hand washing is also easier and when hanging skeins to dry, Skein Snake will give the fibers inside extra support when wet.
Why do you want to wash your skein of yarn? Because:
1. Removes any pre - treatment on yarn, such oil on some cone yarns.
2. Pre-shrinks fibers, accurate swatching
3. Blooms fibers, accurate swatching
4. Plant fibers (cotton, linen, hemp)are softened BEFORE you work with them, making them easier on your hands.
5. Relaxes recycled yarn - takes the kinks out.
Prewashed yarn is prettier, easier on your hands, and cleaner. Prewashed yarn is preshrunk making swatching accurate. Rather than knitting a swatch, washing and drying and then calculating the amount of shrinkage, preshrink the yarn and avoid errors later.
Caution - yarns that felt will felt using Skein Snake! Always test for felting and colorfastness before washing.
You can also use Skein Snake as a Skirt Snake! Zip your broomstick skirts into Skein Snake to wash, dry, store for perfect crinkly wrinkles.
