Stylish Square Hat / Basket for Right-Handed Crocheters

Ventura: "Tapestry crochet differs from ordinary crochet in its texture, tension, and how colors are manipulated. Two or more colors are worked at the same time to create intricate or simple motifs. One is carried while another is worked over it. Tapestry crochet has the flexibility of crochet, but looks more woven than crocheted. Depending upon which way it is turned, this project is a trend-setting hat or a functional basket. The square hat/basket begins in the center, then spirals outward. A flat square base is crocheted first, then when the diameter of the base is no longer increased, the edges move upwards to form the sides. The stitches at the rim are then gradually decreased to achieve a perfect fit! The instructions for this hat/basket were originally published in the Winter 2007 issue of Black Purl. Gauge is 28 single crochets to 4"/10cm on a steel size 1 US9/2.75mm hook." Left-handed version is available here.
