This is an excellent basic for a fresh new knitter, with only side and shoulder seams to sew when done-- the neckline has its finishing built in. The shoulders and back neck are straight. It would look equally well on a man or a woman, and the size range is generous enough to allow for that. The garter yoke gives an impression of strength and texture, and because of the way garter stitch compresses a bit in the vertical axis, provides extra warmth for people whose sternums are always a bit chilly. The pattern is written (as are all the designs in the New Knitter series) in a very easy-to-follow chart kind of format-- not in 'knitterese'.
