The sheer glory of the Claudia handpaints are magnificently showcased in this beautiful fair isle piece. Bortner works it carefully with a ribbed internal hem, makes a purled foldline, and then launches into the fair isle patterning. Customizing this, by the way, is up to you-- the designer provides six charts from which to work, and you can largely mix them up as you please. You need about 1.5 skeins of the main colour and part skeins of the others. Working from one dyer's palette gives an enchanting overall cohesion to the hat, a unity of outlook and purpose.
