"I love sweaters," says Szabo, "but sometimes they are too warm for indoor wear. This design fills the bill nicely—- the gansey yarn looks stylish without being stifling, and the cardigan style allows it to be worn open or closed. " This is one of the most traditional yarns on the market, happily still available in the traditional colours (yes, red is one of them). Here Szabo, with her scholar's understanding of the gansey tradition, has combined cables and small knit/purl patterns to enormously attractive effect: though the construction is unorthodox. You start with the rope cable at the bodice, and pick up for the yoke and work up; then pick up for the 'skirt' and knit down.
