Patterson: "In architecture, a cloister is a covered walkway with an open colonnade on one side and buildings on the other, which opens into a quadrangle, a completely enclosed square courtyard or garden. Cloisters are usually part of a church or monastery. In medieval times cloisters were primarily used as places of quiet meditation or study. The pattern is named for Venice’s Isola di San Michele and its cloister. The scarf is worked from the cast on edge to the center of the scarf. Both ends are worked, then the raw edges are grafted together. The pattern is written in one size, and provides both written and charted stitch instructions."
