"This classically shaped triangular shawl is knit differently than most," says Patterson. "Knitting starts with the central leaf pattern, the two sides are added one at a time, the triangle is made larger, and then the shawl is finished with a wide applied border." It is indeed a stunning piece; for some reason we immediately imagined the last Russian Tsarina, Empress Alexandra, swathed in it. Quite extraordinary in conception, it is all charted-- there are no written-out lace instructions.
