"Scarf and shawl," says Patterson, "are knit from a provisional cast on toward the center of the garment. Stitches are then picked up from the provisional cast on, and a border is knit. Stitches are left live until the second side is knit, then are grafted to the first side." This is a piece that is extremely simple, and yet has a rare loveliness; the weight of the yarn and needle size and blocking choices could not set one another off better. Simple and striking, and not out of the reach of the ambitious but inexperienced.
