This sweater is now well over 20 years old, and it is every bit as compelling now as it was when it first came out. Gaughan has always evidenced a kind of insuperable talent that can puzzle as much as it delights: how did she know the twisted Bernini cable columns on this guernsey were going to work so well? Combine so artfully with the brocade stitch (over which the gauge is measured) and the neck and buttonband treatment? Who knows? But she did. There's a rogue aftermarket-type of underarm gusset as well, which you may find yourself using in other garments. Cambridge is gone, but Classic Elite's Summer Set should do beautifully instead.
