Finlay, a mother of vim and experience, goes the extra mile here and makes her appliqued embellishments in 3-D to match your child's personality. To really predispose these pieces to felting, she cleverly works them with two strands of an aran-weight yarn held together-- building extra-feltability into the process. As always, Finlay's pattern is a model of clarity and detail, well spaced and easy to read. Straps are made flat then closed with a long seam for those who don't like I-cord; if you prefer, you could make them that way. Hat is knit in the round except for the brim. Very pretty and very practical.
