Here is a stunning poncho based on a kind of mandala-- that is, the large circular section (back and front are alike). A mandala represents wholeness, and you can really see it here, since it contains garter stitch, ribbing, and cables-- the foundation elements of our craft. You make the mandalas first, working the entire circle like the hand of a clock sweeps the face, shaping with wrapped short rows as you go. You then pick up for the ribbed shoulders, and work up; join at the top, finish the turtleneck, and away you are, mysterious and beautiful.
